Shock physics provides solutions to prevent risks and ensure the security of populations in the face of the major threats of our time. How well would a factory resist in the event of an industrial accident? Or a building in a plane crash? A concrete wall under ballistic fire? Urban glazing hit by a breeze block? What should the security perimeter be in the event of an explosion?

Materials behave very differently under dynamic conditions. Therefore it is essential to carry out physical tests at high velocities. Using our wide range of test equipment—especially our dynamic press Jupiter, which can generate a 200-tonne charge in 3 ms—we can carry out the tests you need in order to understand how your materials behave under fast dynamic conditions. Testing thus makes it possible to calibrate our computer codes with a high degree of precision, so that shock phenomena may be observed in the minutest detail, better understood and extrapolated to full-scale phenomena. We offer our extensive knowledge to help our clients assess the vulnerability of the structures used in their constructions and develop materials that are able to stand up to modern-day threats (blasts, detonations, ballistic impacts, etc.). The goal: ensure that buildings resist and civilians are protected.

Dynamic tests + numerical simulation

We combine laboratory tests with numerical simulation. Because physical phenomena recorded during the laboratory tests may be anticipated by numerical simulation. In turn, the results of the impact and material-characterization tests are used to improve and fine-tune our numerical simulation software, for more realistic simulation.

These two areas of expertise mutually enhance one another to provide you with the most reliable and tangible data concerning the behavior of your materials and structures in the event of an explosion or shock.

TESTS + NUMERICAL SIMULATION = RELIABLE RESULTS + TIME SAVINGS + MONEY SAVINGS

A world-unique laboratory

Our laboratory, inaugurated in 2008, is the first private institution to specialize in shock physics and fast dynamics. The unique technology of our gas guns allows us to achieve higher impact speeds than anyone else. Our 2500 m2 laboratory and our test facilities have been ergonomically designed so that your test campaigns may be carried out as swiftly as possible and rapidly reconfigured to meet your most specific requirements.

Cutting-edge metrology

To obtain the most accurate data possible, we instrument your test setup with the very best metrology tools available. These may include high-speed cameras, interferometers, speed-measurement systems, strain and acceleration gauges, and X-ray equipment. Nothing can escape our notice, not even the minutest detail.

Did you know?

In addition to the loss of human lives, the disaster at the AZF factory on 21 September 2011 in Toulouse caused the total destruction of a commercial zone and many public amenities in the immediate surroundings, including the sports hall. The cost of property damage amounted to €2 billion.

On 17 February 2017, 3000 gas canisters exploded within the space of an hour in a gas-storage facility in Jonquières in southern France. The dramatic incident required the evacuation of homes in the surrounding area. Debris from the canisters was found as far as 600 m from the site. The cause would appear to be accidental.

On 13 May 2000 in Enschede (Netherlands) a fire broke out in a fireworks warehouse, causing a chain reaction and a huge explosion. 23 dead and 947 wounded, 40 hectares of land burned and 1500 homes damaged or destroyed. The explosion was felt 30 km away.
