Shock Physics has applications in many different fields, which may involve ballistic impacts on military protection, the impact of tyre shrapnel on an aircraft wing, the impact of a piece of space debris on the solar panels of a satellite or the explosion of an industrial building. It offers explanations and practical solutions in response to the major threats of today and the issues that they raise.

Our fast dynamics engineers and researchers have put their skills and experience at the service of manufacturers to study the materials they use, optimise their products and certify the structures they produce. They are also involved in major European research programs.

What is shock physics?

Initially, Shock Physics was used in the second half of the 20th century to address the problem of armour perforation in the military industry. It fast became an essential discipline in the study of the behaviour of materials subjected to high-strain- rate impacts.

Shock Physics is involved, for example, in ensuring that aircraft and military vehicles are both safer and more lightweight, that satellites are better designed so as not to produce debris, and in developing effective means of protecting civilian populations in the face of the terrorist threat. The science now plays a central role in a great number of fields, wherever there is a risk of mechanical shock, crashes, impacts, collisions or explosions: aeronautics, aerospace, defence, civil engineering, automotive industry, etc.

BECAUSE MATERIALS SUBJECTED TO HIGH STRAIN RATES OFTEN BEHAVE UNEXPECTEDLY
