The first training course organized by Thiot Ingenierie’s new entity, the Shock Physics Academy, took place on November 5, 6 and 7 at the company’s new premises in Puybrun (Lot). This was an opportunity to inaugurate the new room for training courses and conferences.
This session focused on “exploring the dynamic behavior of materials and shock physics” and was attended by about 15 participants, engineers, entrepreneurs and operators from all over the country. The topics covered were sufficiently general in nature to allow the attendees to immerse themselves in the founding principles of materials science and the associated digital tools. The key differences between the quasi-static regime in which the phenomena are balanced and the shock regimes characterized by transitory states were presented. As for digital methods, the training focused on the basics, highlighting the main elements that characterize the dynamic regime, namely strong nonlinearities of behavior: “When subject to shock stress, linearity is the exception.”
This first training session was unique because it combined experiments/calculations on the one hand with practical exercises carried out in our company’s shock physics laboratory. In this context, two sessions were scheduled: implementing a rapid camera for ballistic tests and conducting material characterization experiments using Hopkinson bars. Adjusting camera settings according to the test parameters, synchronization, signal processing, errors and uncertainties associated with measurements… These were just some of the topics covered while exploring the world of shock physics.
The training was also a chance for the participants to visit one of the most famous sites in the Lot region, the city of Rocamadour, during a guided tour that ended with a meal at a restaurant.
For future training sessions, the Shock Physics Academy will continue in this logic by combining theory, experiments and calculations, and by proposing new practical exercises in the laboratory.
